Aid for Asia’s aging community
By partnering with local charities, we're creating nutrition packs that come with either juice, Fruit Bowls® or canned fruit for seniors in Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand.
Protecting healthcare workers in the Philippines
In the Philippines we’re donating fresh and dried fruit to 7,000 healthcare workers in 17 hospitals. Also, 300 Healthcare workers at the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) will receive 30 days’ supply of Dole juice that is high in Vitamin C. RITM is at the frontline of doing COVID-19 testing for the Philippines population, and we remain committed to their health.
Giving back to Asia’s grocery and delivery staff
Healthcare isn’t the only industry fighting on the front lines with their own health at risk. Grocery staff and delivery personnel interact keep our economy going. Between the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand we are donating various products to check-out staff of our partner markets to show our gratitude for their essential labour.
Donating to New Zealand’s Needy
With Kids Can, LoveSoup, and likeminded givers, we stepped up to ensure 6,000 vulnerable families and 4,500 seniors will receive the essential nutrients they need to come out of this emergency stronger than ever.
Feeding Singapore
With the help of The Food Bank of Singapore, we’re distributing Dole Care Packs that include canned fruits and Fruit Bowls® to 200,000 needy Singaporeans.
Meals for Mumbai

Committed to the Middle East
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, we’re working on sending Fruit Bowls®, canned fruit, and canned juices to the health care workers working to keep us safe. We’re also working on sending Fruit Bowls® and canned juices to undernourished children, and are working on partnering with local non-profits to expand our efforts.
Europe: Fruit Care Kits
Within France, Italy, and Spain, we’re delivering snack kits to hospitals for health care workers that otherwise wouldn’t have time to get the snacks they need to keep going under high stress.
Keeping London’s Homeless Healthy
In support of homeless charity St Mungo’s temporary accommodation initiative, Dole is distributing 14,500 Fruit Bowls® to over 1,000 homeless Londonders currently housed in hotels. This gives people in desperate need of shelter access to the space and nutrition they need to self-isolate in safety and stay well during the health crisis.

Share Your SupportCaring for Canada
We can never donate enough to our frontline health care workers during this time. Across Canada we’re working with hospitals to serve nutritious meals throughout the weeks so they can be at their best to help us get back to ours. Along with health care workers, we’re also donating meals and snacks to social service agencies and the homeless population.
Unbearable Hunger
No child should go hungry at Christmas. People across the US, Europe and Asia helped us to get nutritious food to hungry children by filling the empty tummies of virtual teddy bears. Our campaign, ‘Dole Unstuffed Bears‘ raised USD 20,000 for food security charities, every dollar of which we matched with fruit donations of the same value.

Educating on Healthier Choices
We are helping to bring blood pressure down throughout Japan, by sharing the benefits of GABA, an amino acid found in bananas. Verified by the government, GABA is particularly effective at lowering high blood pressure. We’re sharing this information on our packaging to encourage healthier food choices.

Getting More from Bananas
In the Philippines, we’re finding clever ways to make use of imperfect bananas and reduce our fruit loss. Instead of being wasted, any delicious, healthy banana that visually doesn’t make the grade is now being made into chips, flour, purée, and more. Collectively, these projects have cut our local fruit loss by 24%, and food waste 32%, while opening up job opportunities for local communities.
March 2021
Moving to Fossil-Fuel Free Packaging
Since March 2021, 78% of our bananas in South Korea have been sold using new paper-based straps. These straps have replaced plastic bags and stickers, reducing our use of fossil-fuel based packaging while still protecting our fruit.
2020 and ongoing
Innovative Packaging Straps
Using our innovative paper packaging straps, we have reduced fossil-fuel based plastic by 85% for our banana packaging in New Zealand. This has also meant that our greenhouse gas emissions have dropped by 3 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) in the Philippines, where we source this packaging.
2021
A Truck Load of Fruit
Working with our retailers, we are ensuring truck food and beverage shipments are not unnecessarily light. We estimate that this initiative is saving 400,000 miles per year from our US supply chain and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 462 tCO2e at the same time.
2020 and ongoing
Forest Rehabilitation
We are showing our love for the land by supporting the National Greening Program in the Philippines. In 2020, we planted 181,666 trees, including 60,949 bamboo plants, and adopted and nurtured rivers, creeks and forests close to our farms too.
Ongoing
Natural Weed Control
In Sri Lanka, we’ve removed herbicides from our weed control thanks to a collaborative project with our workers. Small teams have been assigned ten hectares of land each and trained in natural weed control, and in return they receive a salary supplement. This ecological solution means less soil erosion, more soil biodiversity, better soil quality and with that more nutritious fruit.
Supporting Our Farmers
The livelihoods and well-being of our farmers matters to us. That’s why we’re working together with our partner Solidaridad to teach farmers the skills they need to grow more and earn more, at the same time as protecting the land and soil. As our farmers improve their crops and yields, the availability of high-quality fruit for us to source goes up too.
2021
City Farming
Our employees across Asia have been learning how to grow nutritious food at home, thanks to our partnership with Rooted, an online urban farming platform that supplies everything from grow kits to seeds. In the Philippines, our Urban Farming Initiative has also been boosting the availability of nutrition-packed vegetables during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2021
Water Recycling
Washing bananas uses lots of water, and leaves the water full of impurities such as latex from the fruit, dirt and insects, making recycling challenging. We put a variety of water recycling systems to the test and identified the two most effective. We now use these in 20% of our fruit packing plants in the Philippines, where we have achieved 500% water recycling to date.
Protecting Ecosystems
We’re protecting marine habitats and coastal wetlands in some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, through our Ridge to Reef initiative to prevent environmental degradation. As part of this project, we’ve planted 3.6 million forest and fruit trees, 914,000 bamboo trees and 15,000 mangroves since 2004.
2021
Nothing Goes to Waste
Dole Fruit Chews and Dole Fruitly Juice are two new products created to make sure we use every possible piece of mango and papaya by making it into delicious and healthy snacks. As a result of this innovation, 1 million kg of fruit will be saved from landfill in 2021.
2021
Reducing Fruit Loss with Quality Control
Using cloud-based technology, we’re digitalizing our fruit quality checks and reducing our fruit loss. Working together with quality app ClariFruit, we’re building consistency into our fruit checking, and preventing unnecessary rejections. Japan is already trialling a pilot scheme, with the rest of Asia set to join by the end of 2022.
2021
Power Transformation
By the end of 2021, we’ll be generating 7.9 MWp of our own renewable energy (at maximum capacity) and preventing fruit waste from going into landfill at the same time. That’s because we’re building two large biogas plants that will be powered by the waste fruit from our local canneries and plantation, with the aim of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tCO2e every year.
2021
Getting the Most from the Sunshine
We’ve teamed up with Symbior Solar, to generate renewable energy from the sunshine. In Thailand, we’ve been producing 4 MWh annually since 2020, while in the Philippines, we’re installing solar panels that will also generate 4 MWh of renewable energy every year. We’re estimating that by 2030, our Philippines panels alone will reduce our annual greenhouse gas emissions by 24,272 tCO2e.
2021
Turning Food Waste into Energy
We’ve been looking at inventive ways to create energy from our food waste for many years. One example is using rice hulls. Since 2012, we’ve reduced our local greenhouse gas emissions in the Philippines by 240,000 tCO2e, by generating renewable biomass energy from rice hulls. In doing this, we’ve saved 77 million liters of fossil fuel that would have otherwise been needed.
2021
Feeding Education
Together with Mahintana Foundation and the Philippines Department of Education we’re getting healthy and nutritious food to school children across the country. The Nutripan project produces nutrition snacks such as vegetable-filled breads as an alternative to junk food, making sure kids get the right kind of brain food during their time at school.
2021
Pandemic Help
Dole employees were quick to volunteer when the pandemic struck, assisting in building a COVID-19 test centre. They also offered support with training and capacity building to ensure that local personnel could carry out COVID-19 PCR testing. We provided donations to help and offered the use of our own PCR machine.
2021
Covid-19 Isolation Unit
In August 2020, we teamed up with Howard Hubbard Memorial Hospital to create a state-of-the-art COVID-19 isolation unit. This world-class facility has been able to provide critical help for over 250 people during the global pandemic.
Clean Sanitation for All
Better sanitation is essential for preventing diseases and avoiding malnutrition, particularly in sick children. As such, we’re supporting the The Zero Open Defecation program in the Philippines. Since 2014, the program has helped to install 1,810 hygienic toilets in homes, raising living standards for families throughout the country.
Clean Hands Against Covid
Our sustainability and engineering teams have turned colourful metal drums, into touch-free handwashing sinks. Placed in strategic spots, these facilities, with free soap and demonstrations on proper handwashing help in the fight against COVID-19, by preventing the spread.
